Pride and Prejudice / Mandrie si prejudecata

Donald Sutherland foarte bun in rolul domnului Bennet.

I have a cold and I barely have energy for anything. I want to forget about my throat ache so I make myself a cup of tea, I snuggle in bed and decide to watch again “Pride and Prejudice”. I read the book a few years ago and I loved it! I had already seen the film and after reading the novel, I watched the 1995 tv series, directed by Simon Langton. Out of the two screen adaptations, I much prefer the 2005 film. I think it adapts the book to the screen far better than the tv series and the actors are more suited to their characters.

I know that the tv series was at the time a huge success and that Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy was considered exceptional. I know that as a remembrance of that role, on the lake in front of the mansion that was used as the Pemberley house, a huge balloon picturing Darcy’s body as he was coming out the water when Lizzie was visiting his estate and already seeing him differently.

Still, I believe that that famous icy look of Darcy’s character was far better portrayed by Matthew Macfayden. I feel like his interpretation shows his inner conflict between what he desired and what his relatives expected of him. Keira Knightely perfectly portrays Elizabeth Bennet’s character. Caroline Bingley is as elegant as she is mean (excellent Kelly Reilly in the part) and Rosamund Pike plays a delicate, but not completely fragile Jane Bennet.

Mrs. Bennet is very well interpreted by Brenda Blethyn who gives more depth to the character than the continuous scenes of nerves and screams  we see in the 1995 tv series. Donald Sutherland is a wonderful Mr. Bennet.

The film is very beautiful and the script is well written and follows the book well. The actors match their characters very well. I have to add that the musical background is wonderful, mainly composed from piano notes. It is a film to be watched again and again.
