Filme vazute in 2015 / 2015 in review

As vrea sa amintesc titlurile catorva filme lansate in 2015 si sa va impartasesc impresiile mele despre ele.

1. Wild Card / Joc Periculos (ianuarie)

  • Regia: Simon West
  • Scenariul: William Goldman
  • Distributia: Jason Statham, Milo Ventimiglia, Stanley Tucci…
  • In principiu mi s-a parut un film bun, care arata evolutia profesionala a unui actor, ni-l arata pe Jason Alexander la ani dupa “Seinfeld”, in continuare foarte bun si ne duce un pas mai departe in spatele a ceea ce vedem sau stim despre Las Vegas.

2. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel / Hotelul Best Exotic Marigold 2 (februarie)

  • Regia: John Madden
  • Scenariul: Ol Parker
  • Distributia: Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Dev Patel, Celia Imrie, Richard Gere, Penelope Wilton…

3. Furious 7 / Furios si iute 7 (aprilie)

  • Regia: James Wan
  • Scenariul: Chris Morgan
  • Distributie: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster, Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, Ronda Roussey, Elsa Pataky
  • Luna aprilie ne-a adus ultima parte din seria “Fast and Furious” / “Furios si iute” in care a jucat regretatul actor Paul Walker. Tragica moarte a acestuia a afectat colegii de platou, a cauzat intarzieri enorme in programul filmarilor, ceea ce a declansat certuri intre Vin Diesel in special si restul echipei.

4. Spy / Spioana (mai)

  • Regia si scenariul: Paul Feig
  • Distributia: Melissa McCarthy, Jason Satham, Rose Byrne, Miranda Hart, Jude Law, Bobby Cannavale, Alison Janney

5. Legend / Gangsteri de legenda (septembrie)

  • Regia si scenariul: Brian Helgeland
  • Distributia: Tom Hardy, Emily Browning, Colin Morgan, Taron Egerton…
  • Ecranizarea povestii adevarate a fratilor gemeni gangsteri Kray.

6. The Night Before / Inainte de Craciun

  • Regia: Jonathan Levine
  • Scenariul: Jonathan Levine, Kyle Hunter, Ariel Shaffir, Evan Goldberg
  • Distributia: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie

2015… Funny moments, sad moments, events I took part in, people I met, people I lost… Memories. I realise that many things happened to me throughout 2015 and I’ve changed a bit. The final day before the Christmas holiday brought me one last surprise from 2015. I went to the cinema with my friends, Hristina, Anita and Andreea. We watched “The Night Before”, but I’ll tell you later about the film. Afterwards, we parted outside the mall and the surprise came when we all got a bit melancholic, hugged fondly and felt like we never wanted to leave, even though each one of us had to go and prepare for Christmas. It was an awkward feeling because I never expected this to happen, but a lovely feeling as well because now I am deeply aware that I have three wonderful friends.

I would like to mention a few films that premiered in 2915 and also tell you my opinions regarding them.

1. Wild Card (January)

  • Directed by: Simon West
  • Written by: William Goldman
  • Cast: Jason Statham, Milo Ventimiglia, Stanley Tucci…
  • An interesting project that shows Jason Statham as a filmmaker due to this involvement in developing the story and the film.
  • I loved the music! It took me into the 1950’s. I loved the story that accentuates on the reality behind the blinding light of Las Vegas.
  • One thing I did not agree with was listing Sofia Vergara’s name second on the cast, though she had acted only briefly in the first scene. Another slightly negative point was that the story and the main character’s drama could have been more deeply explored, making it less likely for the question “that’s it?” to arise in the end. Still the film doesn’t seem to end too sudden.
  • On the whole, it’s a good film that shows the professional evolution of an actor, it shows us Jason Alexander, years after “Seinfeld”, still as good as then, and takes us a step beyond the what we see or know about Las Vegas.

2. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (February)

  • Directed by: John Madden
  • Written by: Ol Parker
  • Cast: Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Dev Patel, Celia Imrie, Richard Gere, Penelope Wilton…
  • A very beautiful film that continues the stories started in the prequel called “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” and it recreates a warm and pleasant atmosphere. The film teaches us once more about love, life, friendship and how we can change ouselves if we’re forced to see things, places or people from a different perspective.
  • The actors are amazing. We have the forever electrified Sonny (Dev Patel), his rigid mother (Lilette Dubey), the weird American tourist Guy Chambers (Richard Gere), the calm Douglas Ainslie (Bill Nighy), the optimistic Evelyn Greenslade (Judi Dench) and, last but not least, the cranky yet loving Muriel Donelly (Maggie Smith).
  • A perfect film for a weekend evening spent with your family.

3. Furious 7 (April)

  • Directed by: James Wan
  • Written by: Chris Morgan
  • Cast: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster, Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, Ronda Roussey, Elsa Pataky…
  • April brought the last film from the “Fast and Furious” franchise in which Paul Walker starred. His tragic death affected his fellow actors, caused enormous delays that sparked arguments between Vin Diesel and the rest of the crew. AFter many months of work and a few launch dates postponed, the 1st of April became the day all fans looked forward to.
  • I thought the film was really interesting, it sticks to the pattern of the series, but had a more complex story made out of three lines of action: the personal lives of the characters, Deckard Shaw’s revenge and the recovery of “God’s Eye”.
  • I loved the cars, I liked most of the stunts, I loved the dialogues between the members of the crew, I loved how Deckard Shaw is a shadow that follows every move made by the good guys and I loved to tears the last scene that symbolises Paul Walker’s passing to another world.
  • Sadly, as I already expected (and surely anyone with a trained eye has seen it as well) that technology, even the latest one, can’t replace a human being. Indeed, VFX, CGI and Cody Walker were a good combination to make a copy of Paul Walker, but as Jason Statham told Jet Li in “War”, “the eyes don’t lie”. We see Paul Walker’s face, but unfortunately, his soul isn’t there.
  • I’ve watched all the films that made up the franchise, I liked them and as much as I like stories that continue, I have to say that I think it would be a good idea for them to put an end to it all and let the story as it is. With each one of the characters having a free and beautiful life. The way I see it, there are only two ways the franchise could go on: either it carries on with Brian O’Conner played by Cody Walker + VFX, CGI, which will result in in an excesive increase of the budget, either Brian O’Conner wil no longer exist / appear in the films to come. Either way, “Fast and Furious” will never be the same and some day even the most passionate fans will come to see it and when that will happen the financial earnings will decrease. Taking all those ideas into consideration, I think they should end it now, while it’s still at its peak of popularity.

4. Spy (May)

  • Directed and written by: Paul Feig
  • Cast: Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne, Miranda Hart, Jude Law, Bobby Cannavale, Alison Janney
  • I have to admit that I began to look forward to the release of this film when I read that Jason Statham’s character had to be clumsy, which I thought it was impossible, given that all of his characters in other films act with a mathematical precision.
  • I discovered Melissa McCarthy when she starred in the “Gilmore Girls”, I saw her in “The Heat” and I had read about other roles she had that make her seem to be a crazy woman in the most positive and funny way possible, so I knew what to expect from her.
  • I knew that Miranda Hart was a comedian that had smaller roles in various British tv series and what got to my nerves the most was that everytime I saw her on tv, she seemed to be awkward, not knowing that I would end up liking her due to this particular trait of her characters.
  • So the entire cast seemed at first to be a weird gathering of actors and acting styles, but I knew that Paul Feig (whose “The Heat” I had seen and adored) directing something ingenious and hilarious had to come up.
  • I thought the film was absolutely terrific. It was everything I expected it to be: incredibly funny, a little sad and abundant with intelligent jokes. Paul Feig combined brilliant action with many humorous elements. Melissa McCarthy managed to curse a lot without seeming a vulgar woman and to do some stunts were pretty difficult for her. Jason Statham succeeded into memorizing or improvising endless lines filled with bombastic arguments meant to show how wonderful and powerful he is, only to immediately go and do something completely stupid that would prove he doesn’t even know where he is. Rose Byrne managed to be a woman with a heart made of ice in such a way that she’d be willing to sell a highly dangerous nuclear bomb only so she could get rich. Jude Law was able to shoot and kill a man during a sneeze and blamed the hay fever, though he was in a cellar.
  • I heard that Paul Feig has a unique way of giving directions. He writes them on post-its and gives them to the actors just seconds before filming, forcing them to improvise and allowing him to capture natural reactions that improve the quality of the scene.
  • One thing I liked was that the director said he never wanted to make a comedy using stupid characters, but with normal characters that have unused skills, which cause them to get into trouble, but managing to work things out well in the end. I like that he doesn’t mock his characters like I’ve seen others do.

5. Legend (September)

  • Directed and written by: Brian Helgeland
  • Cast: Tom Hardy, Emily Browning, Colin Morgan, Taron Egerton…
  • The true story of the twin gangsters: the Krays. They controlled a large part of East London of the 70s.
  • Tom Hardy plays both characters and the story is told by the wife of one of the brothers, her character being played by Emily Browning. click here

6. The Night Before (November)

  • Directed by: Joseph Levine
  • Written by: Joseph Levine, Kyle Hunter, Ariel Shaffir, Evan Goldberg
  • Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie
  • I watched the last 2015 film on my list with my friends, a good idea given that the subject of the film is one of the most important: friendship.
  • The film tells Ethan’s story, who became an orphan in his teens and was later under the wings of his friends, Isaac and Chris. The entire action of the film takes place during the last Christmas they spend together, because Isaac will be a father very soon, Chris was an American football celebrity and Ethan was an unknown musician who lost his girlfriend when he refused to meet her parents. After many adventures and rows between them, the three men realise that they were true friends and because they were so close, they would always be together and help each other for the rest of their lives no matter what.
  • It is a very good film and it sends a brilliant message. In my view, the only negative point would be that it is present in a much too vulgar way, drugs, indecent pictures, verbal vulgarity and moments of sheer human stupidity being unnecessarily used, but probably they were integrated in the film to help bring the message to even more viewers. Still, I have to admit that at times we laughed so much that I thought we were going to fall off the chairs.

Many things happened during 2015 and many of those events caught our attention and made us aware of certain aspects. But despite all that, we can’t say it was a bad year. Plenty of good things happened, including some we didn’t expect them to take place. We should see more often the glass as being half full. Sure, we mustn’t forget the empty half, but we must enjoy what and how much we have when we have it instead of feeling sorry for what we don’t. One day we’ll reach the point when we’ll have almost everything we want. Until then, I hope 2016 will be a happy and fortunate year.
